Part 1: 10 Keys to Success

Before determining the keys to success, you must first understand what success means to you. Does it mean having a fulfilling life, money, and respect from others? Is it being physically well, happy, and having stable relationships? Every person does, after all, define success differently.

If you need help figuring out what success means, I suggest spending a few minutes working through the exercise described in our earlier blog post, "The Quest for Success." You will be led through a series of questions and suggestions to help you determine and define success. Dedicating some time to this activity before proceeding would be very beneficial.

Keys to Success

Success is a journey, not a destination. There is, however, a standard list of tactics or keys that can help unlock the doors to a prosperous life.

In this section, you will read through several effective life success techniques. What makes these keys most worthwhile is that once you have found success with them, you have the ability to continue using them in various areas of your life.

Key 1: The Plan

Thomas Edison, a well-known American inventor once said, "Good fortune is what happens when opportunity meets with planning." With that in mind, planning is the first step on your journey to success. It is an essential step to leading a successful life. This entails developing a clear vision of a successful life and creating specific goals to help you realize that life.

To establish a plan, first define the target, goal, or practical aim. Consider what you want from life and write it down somewhere. Clarity in your definition of success is the cornerstone of all your future actions.

Research suggests that aside from having a specific goal in mind, it is crucial to ensure that the relevant tools and tactics are available to help you reach it. Therefore, the second step concerns planning and determining the means necessary to realize your goals. By modifying your plans to center around the goals and objectives you’ve set out to achieve, you are making success your priority and are more likely to advance.

Moreover, planning enables you to foresee potential roadblocks and make plans to overcome them. This lowers the possibility of failure and raises your chances of success. As Benjamin Franklin said, "By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail."

Whether it is in business, education, or personal goals, without a clear plan, you may find yourself aimlessly wandering without direction or purpose. However, by creating a solid plan and following it diligently, you can increase your chances of success in any area of life.

Key 2: Optimization of Your Goals

Success comes from attaining your objectives and achieving your desires. Nonetheless, optimizing your goals is crucial for achieving success. With good optimization, your efforts will stay organized, and you will remember what's most important.

There are two steps to goal prioritization. Once you have identified your long-term goals, the first step is to break them into manageable milestones. When you are traveling a great distance in a car, you don’t get from point A to point B without stopping for gas and breaks. You also go through small towns and big cities along the way. Similarly, you don’t achieve your ultimate goal without small steps.

The second step evaluates and ranks each milestone according to importance and urgency. This ultimately assists you in determining which objectives are most important and which need your urgent attention.

In the meantime, remember that goal setting demands discipline and attention. You want to avoid being compelled to give in to distractions or minor setbacks. Be sure to commit to your priorities by sensibly allocating time and resources.

Remember that setting your goals and priorities is a continuous process. It necessitates ongoing assessment and modification. You should re-prioritize your objectives and modify your strategies when your circumstances and priorities change. If you work hard and follow through with your plan, you can succeed in whatever you want. As described by Anthony Robbins, "Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible."

Key 3: Incorporate Different Strategies

No matter the ultimate goal, success takes time. There are lots of ups and downs, successes and failures along the way. Anyone that has hiked or climbed a mountain can tell you, to get yourself where you want to be, you have to cross valleys as well as peaks. Don’t worry; using various tactics and techniques will help you climb the highs as well as the lows.

Those willing to take risks and push themselves outside their comfort zones frequently make the list of successful people.

There are several reasons why experimenting with diverse strategies is essential. One benefit is that it enables you to explore several methods to see which suits you the best. Everyone succeeds differently, so being open to all your options is crucial. Another reason why it's vital to explore various approaches is that it keeps you flexible and adaptive. Success in today's fast-paced, constantly changing world depends on one's capacity to change course and adapt quickly. People who are overly rigid in their ideas or too fixed in their ways, risk staying the course in the wrong path towards their goal. Simply asking for others' opinions and considering ideas outside of your own is enough to keep you on the right track.

As the old adage says, “If at first you don't succeed, try again.” In this case, try a new strategy or approach. You may see a new angle at a new time that opens your mind and the door to achieving your goal.

Key 4: Smart Risk-Taking

At first, the idea of adopting a new approach could seem dangerous. It may even be terrifying. It’s okay to be afraid of failing. You have to keep in mind the possibility that you could achieve success with just this one strategy or change. While taking risks might be daunting, they can also have positive results. Making deliberate decisions from evaluated risks can result in enormous benefits and accomplishments.

One of the key benefits of taking calculated risks is that it enables you to venture outside of your comfort zone. Many of us fear change and the unknown, which may prevent us from taking risks. Yet taking calculated risks will help you become resilient and adaptable, which are necessary skills for success.

Innovation and creativity are many times the results of taking calculated risks. In other words, you are more likely to find new methods of doing things by experimenting and taking risks.

The biggest risk is not taking any risk. In a world that’s changing quickly, the only strategy guaranteed to fail is not taking risks.
— Zuckerberg, 2023

You must step outside your comfort zone to ultimately reach your goals. Taking calculated risks will assist in reaching your path to success. It's important to remember, however, that being skilled at taking risks is a life skill that takes time to master.

Key 5: Build a Growth Mindset

Another essential factor to success in life is adopting a growth mindset. This entails seeing obstacles and failures as chances for improvement, taking responsibility for one's actions, and persevering through hardships.

A growth mindset in your journey to success will help you be more creative, resilient, and self-assured. One of the leading advocates for adopting a growth mindset, Carol Dweck, wrote, "People with a growth mindset are more resilient in the face of difficulties and failures because they view these things as chances for development and improvement rather than as enormous challenges."

She asserts that with a growth attitude, obstacles are thrilling rather than dangerous. So rather than thinking, “oh, I'm going to show my shortcomings,” you say, “wow, here's a chance to grow!”

It’s not the events of our lives that shape us, but our beliefs as to what those events mean.
— Robbins, 2012

To build a growth mindset, you must focus on developing a positive attitude towards learning and personal development and embracing new challenges enthusiastically. This can include seeking new experiences, taking risks, and being open to feedback and constructive criticism. In addition, it's critical to keep a positive outlook and self-belief despite any setbacks or challenges. By changing your beliefs and perspectives, you can transform your experiences and ultimately achieve tremendous success.
